In order to move forward with the new “hybrid” election system, the City must divide voters into eight geographic districts, each of which will elect its own City Council member in the 2021 election and future elections. The City has engaged an expert, Dr. Nathaniel Persily, of Stanford Law School, to draw these districts. The districts have to contain approximately the same number of registered voters, and two of the districts must be majority minority, where Asian-Americans and Hispanics/Latinos together comprise a majority of the citizen voting age population.
The City and Dr. Persily are interested in feedback and comments from the public about what the districts should look like. You can send your comments to firstname.lastname@example.org. To get an idea of how the districts will be put together, you can visit Districtr and try out interactive software that allows you to draw your own districts.
