Over the next week, from 5/7/18 through 5/10/18 the contractor hired by the City of Lowell will be installing new crosswalks downtown at the intersection of Merrimack Street and Central Street. The scope of work involves the removal of asphalt to install ADA compliant crosswalks. The cross walks will match the other concrete slab and granite crosswalks that have been installed downtown in recent years.

Expect temporary lane reductions, closures, and detours overnight. Construction will begin at 9:00PM. Work is expected to be completed by 6:00 AM daily.

Access to garages, businesses, and residences will NOT be impacted.

Road plates will be in use during the day, please use caution.

Monday 5/7 overnight: Merrimack and Central Streets will be down to one lane, with intermittent closures to complete the work. For both the Central St and Merrimack St crosswalks they will excavate half of the crosswalk and prep for concrete and granite work. They will then place steel road plates over the work and have open to traffic by 6am.

Tuesday 5/8 overnight: Merrimack and Central Streets will be down to one lane, with intermittent closures to complete the work. They will complete excavation and installation of granite for half of both street crossings. Will again be plated for the day.

Wednesday 5/9 overnight: Merrimack and Central Streets will be down to one lane, with intermittent closures to complete the work. Pour concrete in half of each crosswalk, then plate to protect during the curing process.

Thursday 5/10 overnight: Merrimack and Central Streets will be down to one lane, with intermittent closures to complete the work. Will pour the remaining half of each crosswalk. Will then again be plated to protect the work during the curing process.

Plates will be left over the crosswalks over the weekend to protect the work while the concrete cures. The plates will be pinned in place safely and will have asphalt ramps to lessen the impact to motorists.

The City of Lowell appreciates your patience during this construction project. Drivers should expect delays at night, and be prepared to stop and proceed slowly through the detour route. The City reminds everyone to please drive safely.
