SEPTEMBER SENIOR OF THE MONTH
Meet Charles E. Adams III
This young man is 61 years of age and is a victim of Parkinson’s disease. He has had this for 13 years. Despite this handicap, he looks ahead and wants to write a book on this to help others. He wants your input.
Charles was born in Lynn, MA. In 1969 he moved to Lowell. During the Vietnam War he joined the Navy. After 10 years he received an honorable discharge. He is also a graduate of UMass-Lowell. I don’t know where he found the time to raise six children and put them through college, but he did.
His experiences and certifications are too numerous to list as they would fill a book, but I will list a few for you: he’s a certified paralegal, an insurance broker, a pharmaceutical sales rep for several labs, and it goes on and on.
Now it’s time for the personal touch: Charles finds people are afraid to talk to him about his illness and sometimes he feels out of place, t must be awful for him as his credentials prove him to be a pretty sociable person; he misses being one of the guys.
Charles is also a writer that has been published. Well, so long Charlie, you have a longer road to reach 100 than most others, but my bet is with you.
Bill Allen

“ EATING WELL”
Elizabeth Anderson MA, RD, LD
Elder Services Dietitian
September2004
Ever eaten take-out food or leftovers from your favorite restaurant and felt really horrible afterwards? Ever wonder if it was food poisoning? Each year more than 325,000 cases of food-borne illness (food poisoning) are reported – countless more likely go unreported as folks chalk-up their discomfort to “the flu”. Surprisingly, many of us could prevent food-borne illness if we were a little wiser when handling our leftover doggy bags.
One Smart Doggy Bag!
1. Get those leftovers in a refrigerator within one hour of leaving the restaurant or take-out shack. We can keep dangerous bacteria in food at bay if food is refrigerated promptly at a safe 40 degrees or cooler.
- If you know you’ll be taking some of that favorite entrée home, why not bring an insulated cooler along? Remember to keep leftovers and/or coolers in the car, not the trunk, for best results.
- Label your take-out with the date. Read on for a list of how long specific foods stay delectable in your refrigerator. Keep in mind, most food spoils LONG before you can smell, taste, or see anything foul!
Reheat it Right!
1. Reheat leftovers to 165 internal degrees. That means make sure the inside of the food is 165 degrees, not just the oven or microwave you heated it in. The only way you can be sure of this is by using a food thermometer. Don’t confuse meat and food thermometers. Food thermometers are smaller and don’t list types of meat on them. They cost around six dollars at grocery stores.
2. If you re-heat in the microwave, be sure to stir the food throughout the cooking to ensure even distribution of heat.
The Doggy Shelf Life
How long will this last in the refrigerator?
Cooked:
Chicken/pork/beef: 3 - 4 days
Seafood: 2 days
Deli meat: 2 - 3 days
Soups, stews: 3 - 4 days
Pasta/potato salad: 2 - 3 days
Casseroles: 3 - 4 days
Pasta, rice: 1- 2 days

WHAT MEN SHOULD KNOW
Millions of men suffer from an enlarged prostate. Although it may be a common part of aging, men don’t have to live with the bothersome symptoms. In general terms, the prostate is a walnut-sized gland located just below a man’s bladder. Its main function is to squeeze fluid into the urethra as sperm move through during sexual climax. As men age, many are affected by an enlarge prostate –approximately 50% of men over 60 and 90% of men over 70.
When the prostate enlarges, it may be accompanied by urinary symptoms that can lead to a gradual loss of normal bladder function. This condition is called benign prostatic hyperplasa (BPH). It is important to note that BPH is not cancer and is treatable in most cases without surgery.
Signs of BPH include a recurrent urgent need to urinate, pushing or straining to begin urination and frequent urination, especially at night. Left untreated, this condition can lead to urinary tract infections, burning and pain, sudden and complete inability to urinate, or gradual bladder and/or kidney damage.
There are many treatment options available including drug therapy and, in some cases, surgery. Alpha-blockers are the most common drug treatment. They work by relaxing the prostate muscle to improve urine flow and to reduce bladder outlet obstruction. For severe cases of BPH, surgery may be the recommended treatment.
If you experience signs or symptoms of urination difficulty, see your doctor. Your discomfort may be treatable. Your doctor will help you decide what treatment option is best for you.

Double Defense for Preventing Osteoporosis
More than ten million Americans, most of them women, suffer from osteoporosis. Although it’s preventable, 50 percent of American women are at risk of developing the debilitating disease that results in brittle bones that easily fracture. For most women, the disease and its loss of independence and mobility can be prevented by proper exercise and calcium intake.
Women know that calcium is important to their health, but studies show most don’t get enough from diet alone, and need to bridge the gap with a calcium supplement.
“Although we’ve been reminded time and again about its importance, many women still don’t consume enough calcium from food to help prevent bone loss,” explains Miriam Nelson, Ph.D., nutritionist and fitness expert, and author of best- selling Strong Women book series. “A healthy diet, weight-bearing exercises and a calcium supplement, preferably calcium citrate such as Citracal®, can go a long way to protect bone mass.”
Why calcium citrate? It is easily absorbed and can be taken any time of the day according to experts.
As for weight-bearing exercises, a large study by researchers at the University of Arizona shows that the combination of exercising with weights and taking calcium citrate helps build healthy bones. The researchers developed a specific exercise program that they consider most effective in building bone in typically vulnerable areas. The program suggests 20 to 25 minutes of resistance training-two sets of six to eight repetitions-using these six exercise: back extension, leg press, squats, lat pulldown, dumbbell press, seated row.
Seven of 10 minutes of cardiovascular weight-bearing activity, such as skipping, jogging and jumping rope, round out the program. The key to improved bone health is in the intensity of the weight-bearing workout and the level of the resistance training.
OCTOBER SENIOR OF THE MONTH
Who is Meme???
She is the seventh of thirteen Simard children. There were seven boys and six girls, all from Thetford Mines, Canada. These were bread and butter days but Mom and Dad were rich in the family.
Cecil is a young healthy ninety year-old and always has a smile to share.
A blessing arrives, no, not a new baby, not at all. Dad is a good farmer and is offered a job in Barton, Vermont, family and all, to take over and run a big farm. Mom and Dad gave them their assignments and it worked well. Cecil milked cows and helped with the haying. Horses were her favorite animals so she learned to ride them and that will never leave her memory. She did work in a girl’s camp in the laundry in Barton.
Growing pains moving in: another sister heads to Lowell, gets a job in shoe shop, meets the right guy, gets married, and invites Cecil to join them. She does, and then takes a job in shoe shop. She meets this guy, George, playing cards. The bug finally hits them and they become Mr.& Mrs. George Martin. No, he wasn’t rich, just a good-looking nice guy. They had three boys and two girls together. At age 47, George passed away. Cecil and the family carried on and today she is blessed with two great granddaughters.
Bless you on the road to 100, Meme!!!
We are counting on you!!!
