Hamilton Canal District
|
RFQ Available Soon The Hamilton Canal project envisions reinventing 15.2 acres of vacant and underutilized land in the Jackson/Appleton/Middlesex (JAM) Streets area as a new vibrant mixed-use neighborhood. The Hamilton Canal District will transform the primary gateway into the City by connecting the transportation hub at the Gallagher Terminal and Lowell Connector with the core downtown, the Arts District, and the major event venues. The project will include:
This new development will further strengthen the market, expand the City’s employment base, and broaden the population base of creative professionals in the City. Finally, led by a talented and well-connected design and development team, the Hamilton Canal District will include signature architecture and urban design to complement Lowell’s historic built environment. The Hamilton Canal District is among the best opportunities in the Commonwealth to achieve a transit-oriented, waterfront development in the heart of a vibrant and vital city. The Hamilton Canal project can serve as a model for the smart-growth development strategies that are being advocated by national leaders, state officials, including Governor Romney, and the City’s own Master Plan. The Hamilton Canal District is a rare opportunity to have a significant and lasting impact on the development and evolution of Lowell on a scale paralleled only by the City’s founding as a mill town, and the creation of the Lowell National Historical Park. The impact of the successful redevelopment of the Hamilton Canal District will be felt throughout the Downtown, the JAM Area, and City-wide as new residents and businesses change the face of living, shopping, and working in Downtown Lowell. The city is currently completing final property acquisitions, and plans to issue a Request for Qualifications for a Master Developer in June, 2006.
