AAA Merrimack Valley Uses Batteries to Power the MRWC
Recycle Your Used Auto Batteries At AAA Great Battery Roundup
By Eleanor Baker, Editor, AAA Valley News
It has been a privilege for AAA Merrimack Valley to hold an annual AAA Great Battery Roundup throughout our territory each spring for over eight years. Our intention has been to offer local residents an opportunity to recycle used auto batteries. Relieving our back yards, garages and empty lots of hazardous material just seems to be a “no-brainer”.
It is a testament to AAA’s dedication to supporting community improvement. Last year, with our communities’ help, we were able to "round up" hundreds of batteries and send them to a recycling facility. That meant a tremendous amount of hazardous material was no longer lingering in garages and backyards posing a threat to our local environment.
As a result of our 2009 AAA Great Battery Roundup, over $5,400 was garnered from recycling the batteries collected. The funds were donated to the Merrimack River Watershed Council, Inc. (MRWC).
Voice of the Merrimack
AAA Merrimack Valley continues to support the important work of The Merrimack River Watershed Council. We realize the Council works on behalf of the great body of water that connects us all. Executive Director Christine Tabak and her staff supply us all with an eye-opening view of how critical the health and vibrancy of this most valuable resource is to everyone.
As local residents know, living anywhere in the Merrimack Valley means living in close proximity to the shores of the Merrimack River . We all have an impact on its well being and an interest in preserving its health for future generations.
You can help
Help us by spreading the word about AAA’s Great Battery Roundup and/or by volunteering to work at the event! We need volunteers who are able to help handle the batteries and others to represent the Council and offer information on supporting the MRWC through membership. To volunteer, please contact the Council at 978-275-0120 or email them at info@merrimack.org.
If you can’t volunteer you are invited to drop off your used auto batteries and encourage others to do so as well. The event takes place on April 24, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at all AAA Merrimack Valley Offices. Lowell Office at 585 Pawtucket Blvd. For more information on the Roundup please contact Ellen at AAA by calling 978-946-0307 or emailing her at ed’angelo@aaamv.com.
