Baystate Marathon
The Baystate Marathon, hosted by the Greater Lowell Road Runners, will occur on Sunday, October 16, 2011 - 8:00am @ the Tsongas Center. More information can be found at www.baystatemarathon.com.
The race, which is now in its 22nd year, is expected to have 3,000 runners, which is similar to the field of last year’s race.
The race starts at 8:00 a.m. at the Tsongas Center in downtown Lowell and goes to the Tyngsborough Bridge and back into downtown Lowell, finishing at the Tsongas Center. The race lasts until approximately 2:00 p.m.
This event includes both a marathon (26.2 miles) and a half-marathon (13.1 miles). The marathon loops around between the Rourke and Tyngsborough Bridges two-times to make the required 26 miles. The half marathon loops around between the Rourke Bridge and the Tsongas Center (via the Aiken Street Bridge) two-times for its distance.
During the race the following bridges are affected: Tyngsborough, Rourke, O’Donnell (Mammoth Rd), University and Ouelette (Aiken St). It is recommended that residents avoid using any of the aforementioned bridges during the hours of 8:00 a.m. until approximately 1:30 p.m. If crossing is required, it is suggested that residents use Bridge Street and the Hunts Falls Rotary (Route 38). If traveling north it is recommended that the bridges in Nashua, NH be used.
Regarding concerns about safety in the event of an emergency, the event planners work closely with all emergency personnel in Lowell, Chelmsford and Tyngsborough. Under the leadership of the Lowell Fire Department, on race day a command center is established, which has access to and coordinates police, fire, EMS and all ambulances in the area. If 911 is called, this team is alerted and assists in directing the appropriate response. Although measures are taken to prevent civilian vehicle traffic from interfering with the race, emergency vehicle(s) will in no way be inhibited in their response.
