RSS is a method by which Internet users can create virtual subscriptions to content providers, such as news sources. The City of Lowell is happy to provide RSS feeds of its news & announcements and upcoming events. Clicking on a link to a feed in most web browsers will not typically result in a anything but seeing the raw contents of the feed, which look similar to HTML, the language used to create web pages. These feeds are meant to be read by special computer programs known as RSS readers.

There exist a variety of RSS readers capable of interacting with web sites that provide RSS feeds. Some of these readers have features such as aggregating multiple feeds or popping up a notification whenever a new item appears in a feed.
