Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information Systems is a computer-based system for capture, storage, retrieval, analysis and display of locationally defined (spatial) data. GIS applies modern computer graphics and database technology to the efficient, cost effective management and planning of the city's assets. GIS links maps and databases to form a relationship between location and information.

GIS LogoThe City of Lowell Geographic Information System (GIS) maintains a large amount of data in "layers" which can be overlayed onto City maps, which we hope you will find helpful. These layers include building footprint locations, address information, street centerline network, railroads, waterway/wetlands areas, paved roadways, schools, neighborhood boundaries, election wards and districts, zoning boundaries, police and fire stations, and a digital parcel base map that displays the information taken from the hard copy Tax Assessor maps. The maps are rendered through ESRI's ArcGIS and ArcIMS tool suites.

Please note that the GIS data, layers, and maps are provided as a public service, and intended as a general tool on matters of public interest; accordingly, the data is subject to change without notice, and is not intended to serve as legal, accounting, tax, or other advice. Each user of this data is responsible for determining its suitability for his or her intended use or purpose. Information contained or derived from this data is not under any circumstance to be construed or used as a "legal description". City Departments will not necessarily approve applications or requests based solely on GIS data. Applicants for city permits, licenses, or other services must inquire of the relevant City Department for applicable requirements. The City of Lowell shall have no liability for the data or lack thereof, or any decisions made or action not taken in reliance upon any of the data provided.
