Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Innovation has been the cornerstone of Lowell since the City was founded. As the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, Lowell continues to reinvent itself and is keeping pace with the Greater Lowell region, Boston and Cambridge, hot-beds of Innovation in the country and the world!
Lowell has the ingredients to attract innovators and entrepreneurs:
- Great access to the highway and public transportation;
- Highly skilled workforce;
- Affordable commercial space; and
- Plenty of housing options.
The City of Lowell, Economic Development staff in collaboration with other local and regional organizations provide great resources to entrepreneurs looking to set-up roots here in the City. Below is a list of available resources and programs, from available space, to one-on-one technical assistance:
Entrepreneurship Development:
175 Cabot Street, Lowell, MA
Established in 2010 with the goal to help foster entrepreneurial growth within mid-size cities in MA. EforAll provides an Accelerator Program and several "Pitch Contests" throughout the years.
The UMass Lowell Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship The "Difference Makers" Sponsors specific programs and activities that encourages students and faculty to engage in problem solving and entrepreneurship.
Co-Working and Incubator Space:
U-Mass Lowell Innovation-HUB "I-hub"
110 Canal Street, Lowell, MA
Located in the heart of the Hamilton Canal District, the I-Hub provides technology-driven start-ups and small companies with 24-hr. access to co-working space, meeting and conferencing, as well as access to state-of-the-art lab and clean-room space for rapid prototype development. The i-Hub is affiliated with the “Workbar” partners network allowing its members full access to Workbar in Cambridge and vice-versa.
U-Mass Lowell M2D2
The MA Medical Devices Development Center at U-Mass Lowell provides incubator space and state-of-the-art lab facilities for early-stage medical device companies.
The Merge at Merrimack 100 Merrimack St, Lowell, MA
The "Merge”, is the newest and “coolest” co-working space in the heart of Downtown Lowell .
UTEC's Food Business Incubator50 Warren St, Lowell, MA
This is a new 5,000 square-foot kitchen incubator created for food-startups.
Makers Space
Lowell Makes
47 Lee Street , Lowell, MAMembership based co-working space providing affordable workshop type environment, equipment and tools for a variety of start-ups and "makers" from carpentry to 3D printing. Membership comprise of a combination of artists, makers and "thinkers".

Provides incubator space to small start-ups and indie retailers.
New Vestures
250 Jackson Street, 5th Floor, Lowell, MA
Provides space, equipment and tools to fashion designers and fabric related start-ups and makers.
