Howe Building

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, the Howe Building is located at 208 Middlesex Street.  Built in 1882, it is one of Lowell's most outstanding examples of Queen Anne commercial architecture.  A central, wide-stepped gable is the focal point on the building while a wide range of other Queen Anne architectural features adorn the façade including fan and sun shapes carved in the dormers as well as panels of brick decoration on the main façade.  The building is a lively mix of colors and textures characteristic of Queen Anne architecture.

The building should not be confused with another Howe Building downtown at the corner of Prescott and Merrimack Streets.

The Howe Building is also located within the National Register-listed Lowell National Historical Park & Preservation District as well as the Downtown Lowell Historic District under the design review and permitting jurisdiction of the Lowell Historic Board.
