Apply for Permits
A complete application requires the following documents:
Commercial & Residential Building Permit (s) checklist
Trade (s) Checklist (i.e. plumbing, gas, electrical, HVAC)

Apply for a Building Permit
Per the Massachusetts State Building Code, a building permit is required to construct, reconstruct, alter, repair, remove or demolish a structure; or to change the use or occupancy of a building or structure.

Construct / Re-Pave Driveway
You do not need a building permit for a driveway. However, a driveway permit is required from the City Engineer's Office.

Detached Garage Permits
A detached garage must be located a minimum of five (5) feet from the side and rear property lines, a minimum of ten (10) feet from the principal structure on the same lot, and must be a maximum of 1 story in height.

Fence Permits
A fence up to six feet in height may be located on or close to a lot line. No building permit is required. However, a fence cannot obstruct views on corner lots.

Home Occupation
The Zoning Ordinance allows some home occupations to be registered with Development Services and the City Clerk.

Storage Shed Permits
A shed no more than 120 square feet in area and 16 feet in height may be located within the side and rear yard setbacks. However, it must be at least 10 feet from the dwelling.

Swimming Pool Permits
A permit is required to install a swimming pool. The State Building Code defines a swimming pool as any structure that contains water over 24 inches (610 millimeters) in depth and which is used, or intended to be used, for swimming or recreational bathing.

Wood Stove Permits
All woodstoves must have a building permit. When you apply for the permit, you should submit a copy of the manufacturer's installation instructions.
