MassDOT Advisory: Lowell
VFW Highway over Beaver Brook
Phase I bridge opening and traffic shift– Monday, January 4
LOWELL – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is announcing that eastbound vehicular traffic on VFW Highway in Lowell will be shifted onto a portion of the newly completed Phase 1 Bridge over Beaver Brook at 11:00 a.m. on Monday January 4, 2021. Eastbound traffic will be shifted to the south side of the new bridge and will continue to be restricted to a single lane.
Westbound vehicular traffic will temporarily remain in its current alignment on a portion of the existing bridge to allow work crews to safely and efficiently complete pavement marking modifications and relocate temporary median barriers as part of the traffic management for the next phase of construction. That work is expected to be completed during the week of January 4. Westbound vehicular traffic will be shifted to the south onto the remaining portion of the new Phase I bridge on Monday January 11, 2021 during the late/morning/early afternoon and will continue to be restricted to a single lane.
Traffic signs and messaging will be used to guide drivers through the work zone. MassDOT encourages drivers to reduce speed and use caution. All work is weather dependent and subject to change without notice.
The new traffic management will allow the contractor to commence work associated with the Phase II bridge. The work is part of the $12.2 million project to replace the bridge carrying VFW Highway over Beaver Brook and to reconstruct the adjacent sections of VFW Highway.
