The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing the Pawtucket Street Bridge over the Pawtucket Canal in Lowell will be temporarily closed to pedestrians and bicyclists from 7:00 a.m., Monday, March 9, 2020 to 7:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 17, 2020. The temporary impacts are necessary to allow work crews to safely and efficiently remove portions of the existing center bridge pier in support of Phase 1 construction for the new bridge carrying Pawtucket Street over the Pawtucket Canal. The existing bridge was closed to vehicular traffic on February 10, 2020 and that restriction will remain in effect until further notice.
Bicyclists and pedestrians affected by the temporary closure should follow the vehicular detour route currently in place using School Street, Broadway and Walker Street.
Appropriate signage and messaging will be in place to guide pedestrians and bicyclists along the detour route.
All work is weather dependent and subject to change without notice.
This work is associated with the $15.5 million project to replace or rehabilitate five bridges spanning the Canal System within Lowell. The overall project is expected to be completed in April 2022.
