The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has announced that the intersection of VFW Highway and Mammoth Road in Lowell will be closed to all vehicular traffic on Wednesday night October 16th, from 8:30PM though 5AM Thursday morning. This off-peak impact is necessary in order to allow crews to safely and effectively place new Hot Mix Asphalt throughout the entire intersection.

During this time, the eastbound direction of VFW Highway will be closed at the intersection of Brookside Street and all traffic will be detoured to Woodward Street leading to Third Ave and then right onto University Avenue rejoining VFW Highway.
The westbound direction of VFW will be detoured onto University Ave to Third Ave and rejoining VFW Highway at Brookside Street. Traffic to the School Street Bridge from Pawtucket Blvd. will be detoured to the University Avenue Bridge.

This work is associated with the $1.45 million project to reconstruct the intersection and roadway approaches, including new traffic signals, pavement markings, sidewalks and curbing. This project is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2019.

Those traveling through the area should expect delays, reduce speed and use caution. Appropriate signage and messaging along with Police Details will be in place to guide drivers through the work area. The schedule for this work is weather dependent and subject to change without notice.
