Bureau of Health Information, Statistics, Research & Evaluation

The Bureau monitors the health status of Massachusetts residents and identifies emerging trends. The Bureau collects legal, medical, and statistical information on births, deaths, cancers, health behaviors, and injuries. The Bureau issues certified copies of vital records, provides research databases and technical assistance in their use, interprets data to inform the public and disseminates health information about at-risk groups, communities, and the Massachusetts population.

BRFSS Statewide Reports & Publications

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is an annual telephone survey that collects data on emerging public health issues, health conditions, risk factors and behaviors. The BRFSS collects information on topics such as racial disparities in health and health care, trends in chronic diseases, and health risk factors. The data is used for health care policy planning, as a guide for developing preventive health interventions, and as an assessment of health status in Massachusetts

Vital Records Data & Publications

The Registry of Vital Records and Statistics (RVRS) provides data about Massachusetts births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and fetal deaths for use by government agencies, researchers, and the public. RVRS also publishes annual birth and death reports that present the most frequently requested data including leading causes of death, teen birth rates, quality of prenatal care and infant mortality.
