Special Election, 1st Middlesex State Senate District
IMPORTANT POLLING LOCATION INFORMATION
Lowell Public Schools will be in session or the February 3 and March 3 Special Primary and Election. To accommodate students, the following changes are being made for the Special Primary and Election ONLY.
- Lowell High School (Ward 4, Precincts 3, 3A and 4A) vote in GYMNASIUM, entrance at 75 Arcand Dr.
- Greenhalge School (Ward 2, Precincts 1 and 2 and Ward 4, Precinct 4) vote in MAIN LOBBY, enter from Victor St.
A permanent change will be made at the Morey School (Ward 6, Precincts 1, 2 and 4A): vote in Cafeteria, entrance from Pine St.
In October 2025, State Senator Edward J. Kennedy passed away unexpectedly, leaving a vacancy in the 1st Middlesex District which includes Dracut, Dunstable, Lowell, Pepperell and Tyngsborough.
A Special State Primary to nominate Democratic and Republican candidates was held on February 3, 2026 (view primary results (pdf)) and a Special Election to fill the vacancy will be held March 3, 2026.

Note: M.G.L Chapter 54 section 25B prohibits in-person Early Voting in Special Elections for State Senate. Vote by Mail is available upon request for all elections in 2026
Important Dates:
- December 23, 2025 at 5PM: Deadline to submit nomination papers to local election officials for certification
- December 30, 2025 at 5PM: Deadline to submit nomination papers to the Secretary of the Commonwealth, Elections Division
- January 24, 2026: Last day to register to vote for the February 3, 2026 Primary
- January 27, 2026: Last day to apply for a mail-in-ballot for the February 3, 2026 Primary
- February 21, 2026: Last day to register to vote for the general election on March 3, 2026
- February 24, 2026: Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot for the March 3, 2026 General Election.

2026 State Primary & Election
A State Primary will be held Tuesday, September 1, 2026 to nominate Democratic and Republican candidates for state and federal offices. The State Election will be held Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
What's on the ballot?
The following will appear on the 2026 ballots:

Ways to vote
Vote by Mail will be available upon request for all elections in 2026.
In-person Early Voting will be available for the State Primary from Saturday, September 22 through Friday, September 28 and for the State Election from Saturday, October 17 through Friday, October 30. There will be no in-person Early Voting for the Special State Election or Special State Primary.
Election Day voting is available in all elections and polls will be open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. To find your polling location, check your voter registration online or call us at 978-674-4046.
